In their season opener, the Governors State JV women’s basketball team took on Joliet Junior College in a hard-fought game but ultimately fell short with a final score of 81-53. GovState showed resilience, especially in the second half, but Joliet’s consistent scoring was too much to overcome.
The game was evenly matched in the first quarter, with each team scoring 8 points. Joliet gained momentum in the second quarter, outscoring the Jaguars 23-8 and establishing a lead they would carry through the remainder of the game. GovState fought back in the third quarter, posting their highest-scoring quarter with 21 points, including solid shooting from beyond the arc at 50%. However, Joliet maintained their scoring edge in the second half, closing out the game with a decisive fourth quarter.
Alayah Sprattling led the Jaguars in scoring with 16 points and adding 6 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 steals in a standout performance. Peyton Greenwood chipped in 11 points, shooting 2 for 3 from three-point range, and Tiara Croft added 10 points while leading the team with 9 rebounds, bringing energy and control in the paint. Aydrianna Simmons also contributed 9 points, with her defense providing additional board support.
Despite shooting challenges in the first half, Governors State improved in the third quarter with a 58.3% field goal percentage, showing flashes of the team’s potential. Their aggressive rebounding and solid teamwork kept them competitive, even as Joliet’s high-percentage shooting made the difference.
This first game provided Governors State with valuable experience, and they’ll look to build on these efforts as the season progresses.
