The Governors State University women’s volleyball team faced a formidable opponent in the undefeated Viterbo squad, ultimately falling 3-0. Despite a tough match, the Jaguars demonstrated resilience, pushing through each set and continuing to improve their teamwork and strategy in a challenging conference season.
In the first set, the Jaguars struggled to find their offensive rhythm, recording six kills against ten errors, which resulted in a .138 hitting percentage. Viterbo’s strong attack quickly put them ahead, closing the set 25-14. Governors State fought back, with senior Delia MacDonald and freshman Avaleena Stewart leading the offensive charge, each tallying crucial points for the team.
The second set was challenging, as Viterbo’s defense limited the Jaguars to just four kills and forced multiple errors, resulting in a .071 hitting percentage for the set. GovState struggled to overcome Viterbo’s defense, ending the set 25-9. Even so, players such as Vanessa Freitas and Joharis Castillo showed determination, contributing key plays and putting pressure on Viterbo’s back row.
The final set saw the Jaguars continue to battle, led by Stewart, who finished the game with an impressive .357 hitting percentage and five kills. MacDonald added four kills of her own, and Vanessa Segura stepped up defensively with five digs, helping the team to stay competitive. Ultimately, Viterbo’s strong play led them to a 25-12 set win and a 3-0 match victory. Governors State will look to build on this experience and fine-tune their strategy as they prepare for upcoming games.
