The Governors State Jaguars women’s soccer team suffered a hard-fought 2-0 loss to Viterbo University on Oct. 15, but the score only tells part of the story. Despite the loss, the match was defined by an incredible performance from goalkeeper Valentina Jimenez, who made an astounding 20 saves, nearly single-handedly keeping the Jaguars in the game. Facing relentless pressure from Viterbo, Jimenez’s heroics between the posts gave the Jaguars hope until the final whistle.
The match remained scoreless through the first half, with Jimenez making save after save to frustrate the Viterbo offense. However, the defensive wall finally broke in the 53rd minute when Jenna Bennett found the back of the net off an assist from Evelyn Shaw. Viterbo added their second goal in the 73rd minute through Casey Hill, giving them the cushion they needed to see out the match.
Offensively, the Jaguars struggled to generate chances, managing four total shots and three on goal. Midfielder Kaylie Dahms and defender Morgan Bean each registered shots on target, but Viterbo’s defense held firm. The Jaguars worked hard defensively, with Victoria Salas also adding a shot on goal, but they couldn’t break through for a score.
Despite the loss, the game’s story was undeniably Jimenez’s stunning performance. Facing 22 shots on goal, she posted one of the most remarkable goalkeeping efforts of the season, keeping the game within reach for Governors State.
