Governors State University is ready to celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month this October with an array of events promoting understanding, inclusivity, and support for the LGBTQ+ community.
Throughout the month, a visual display in the B-Wing display case will highlight notable LGBTQ+ champions who have significantly contributed to the fight for equality and acceptance.
LGBTQ+ History Month started with a Rainbow Resources event hosted by the Center for Student Engagement and Intercultural Programs. The event featured refreshments, activities, and information about LGBTQ+ resources and promoted the Gay-Straight Alliance Club.
Other events on the calendar include:
- Oct. 9 – DEI Lunch and Learn: How to Support LGBTQ+ Students. A safe space for open dialogue and learning from 12:30 – 1:15 p.m. in room D-34011.
- Oct. 11 – National Coming Out Day Celebration: A symbol of love and acceptance for the LGBTQ+ community from noon – 2 p.m. in the Lakeside Lounge.
- Oct. 16 – Transgender Day of Remembrance: A solemn observance to honor the lives of transgender individuals lost to violence from 2 – 3:30 p.m. in Engbretson Hall.
- Oct. 22 – Drag Bingo: A fun and fabulous evening of entertainment and community-building at 7 p.m. in the Hall of Honors.
- Oct. 24 – Safe Zone Training Workshop: This event will promote allyship and understanding from 1 – 2:30 p.m. in Engbretson Hall.
- Oct. 25 – “The Rocky Horror Picture Show:” A cult classic film screening with a participatory twist at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Performing Arts
- Oct. 31 – The events will conclude virtually with “31 Days, 31 Icons,” recognizing the achievements of prominent LGBTQ+ figures.
