The Governors State University women’s volleyball team took care of business on the road, defeating Calumet College of St. Joseph in four sets (25-17, 25-16, 20-25, 25-19). With this win, the Jaguars improved to 5-8 overall and 1-4 in CCAC play, while Calumet fell to 0-13 on the season.
The Jaguars came out strong, taking control of the first two sets behind efficient attacking and solid defense. Although Calumet managed to claim the third set, GSU bounced back in the fourth to finish off the match.
Leading the way for GSU was Jennifer Barwicka, who had a stellar performance with 12 kills and an impressive .409 hitting percentage. Layana Lima was a force on both ends, adding 9 kills and 5 service aces, helping to rack up 15.5 points for the Jaguars. On defense, Yareli Pacheco anchored the team with 15 digs, while Alejandra Maldonado added 10 of her own. The Jaguars also had a strong showing at the net, with Delia MacDonald contributing 2 solo blocks and 2 block assists. GSU’s serve game proved to be a difference-maker, as the Jaguars tallied 12 aces, including key contributions from Lima and MacDonald.
Despite hiccups in the third set, the Jaguars kept their composure and secured the win. The team will look to build on this momentum as they continue their conference schedule.
