The GovState’s women’s soccer team took on Grace College from Indiana on Sept. 14. Grace came in with a perfect 6-0 record trying to make it a lucky 7, while the Jaguars were coming in 2-2-1 trying to achieve a positive record.
The first 30 minutes of play were highlighted by strong defensive play from the Jaguars as they contained Grace’s firepower. The strong backline could not hold forever though, as scoring started in the 30th minute when Abby Hodkin scored the first goal for Grace. From there the flood gates opened, and the score was 3-0 at halftime.
Grace scored five more goals in the second half to make the final score 8-0.
It was a tough loss as the Jaguars managed just five shots, only three of which were on goal. All of the potential scoring shots came from Senior Morgan Bean. Goalkeeper Junior Valentina Jimenez Figueroa also had a game-high 6 saves as she kept the score much lower than it could’ve been.
The Jaguars will face off against the Holy Cross saints on Sept. 21, as they try to put this game behind them and look to create a positive record for the rest of the season.
