Governors State will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 5, at 3:30 p.m. to celebrate the opening of its new Social Justice Institute (SJI).
The event will take place at the SJI building. According to the RSVP form, the SJI building “has been designed to create a welcoming and uplifting environment while connecting occupants to the surrounding natural landscape.”
The establishment of the SJI embodies the vision of GSU President Cheryl F. Green, responding directly to ongoing racial unrest and disparities. Under the leadership of Dr. Phyllis West, the institute aims to dismantle barriers to higher education, foster success, and promote equity throughout the Southland Community.
West said the institute focuses on collaborative efforts among GSU faculty that can address various social justice issues. More than 50 faculty members completed a survey of how the university could best serve the community. The survey highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary research, training, educational rights, experiential learning projects, internships, and practicums as critical components of the institute’s initiatives.
A notable project within the SJI is Dr. Mary Carrington’s environmental justice program for graduate students, which aims to address local environmental concerns. Additionally, West’s efforts in prison education have been fundamental in creating opportunities for incarcerated individuals.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony will coincide with the Student Convocation Ceremony, scheduled for the same day at 1 p.m. in the Center for Performing Arts. Convocation is a welcoming event for new and returning students starting the academic year. A Welcome Back Celebration will occur after the convocation, allowing students to engage with university officials and peers.
Since its inception, the SJI has made significant impacts, including launching a free legal aid clinic in June of 2023. The clinic has served over 550 individuals seeking legal guidance on various issues. It offers pro bono legal education and assistance in housing, expungement, immigration, and more. The SJI is seeking Spanish-speaking volunteers to assist in the legal clinic. Interested community members are encouraged to contact West.
