The Governors State University Office of International Services (OIS) has announced the schedule for Optional Practical Training (OPT) workshops for the year 2024. These workshops are available to students who will fulfill all their degree requirements by May 2024 and are eligible to apply for OPT.
OPT is a program that permits international students with F-1 visas to acquire practical work experience relevant to their academic field. It can last for up to 12 months (or 36 months for STEM fields) and involves applying through the Customs and Immigration Service.
OPT enables students to develop practical skills, explore career pathways, and potentially secure longer-term employment opportunities within the United States.
Attending an OPT Workshop is mandatory before OIS can issue an OPT Recommendation I-20 to students. The workshop provides a detailed overview of OPT, covering eligibility requirements, application timelines, necessary forms, and USCIS expectations.
Attendees will acquire a comprehensive understanding of the OPT process, equipping them to navigate the application procedure confidently and make informed choices about practical training prospects.
Students have several options to register for the upcoming OPT workshops. For on-campus
sessions, they can choose between Thursday, March 14, from 11 a.m. to noon, or Wednesday, April 10, 2 to 3 p.m. The workshops will take place at the GMT 180 building.
Alternatively, students can participate online on Tuesday, March 26, from 2 to 3.00 p.m., or Thursday, April 25, from 10 to 11 a.m. The online sessions provide flexibility for students to attend from any location.
To participate in one of the workshops, students must register with their GSU Email ID. They will receive the link via email once registered. It is essential for students to join the workshop on time.
