February is Black History Month. Members of the Governors State community can celebrate African American heritage and history with a wide range of events and activities hosted by the Center for Student Engagement and Intercultural Programs and campus partners.
Black History Month Visual Display, B-Wing Display Case, All Month long
Celebrate Black History Month with a visual exhibition highlighting the 2024 theme “African Americans and the Arts,” which spans Black Americans’ many impacts on visual arts, music, cultural movements, and more.
Feb. 7, A Legacy of Excellence: The National Pan-Hellenic Council
Black Greek-letter sororities and fraternities have been a pivotal part of African American history and culture since the early 20th century. Members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council or Divine Nine are encouraged to represent their organizations by wearing pins, colors, or other forms of Greek paraphernalia. Questions? Feb. 7, 1 – 2 P.M. Soulful Fusion: Taste of African and Soul Food (Hall of Governors)
Enjoy a complimentary tasting of traditional African cuisine and American soul food while playing a round of trivia focused on Black History. Students, faculty and staff are also encouraged to wear African-inspired attire to celebrate Black History Month.
Feb. 15, 12 – 2 P.M. On My Block Candy Fundraiser (Hall of Governors)
Come support Black Student Union’s fundraiser in a fun environment! Students will enjoy games, live Double Dutch lessons and treats. This is a cash-only fundraiser.
Feb. 20, 1 – 3 P.M. Black Excellence: A Celebration of Black Inventors (Hall of Governors)
Kaleidoscope Service Council extends a warm invitation to the GovState community to celebrate the ingenuity and contributions of Black inventors. Let’s collectively honor the creativity, resilience and brilliance of Black visionaries who have left an indelible mark on our world.
Feb. 26, 5:30 – 9:30 P.M. 34th Annual African American Read-In (Engbretson Hall)
Dr. Rashidah Muhammad, founding faculty and host, invites the campus to join over a million readers from all backgrounds to celebrate literacy and Black History Month! Select a short excerpt to read from a book, poem or other literary work written by an African American author. This event is for adults and children. All selections must be G-rated.

Feb. 27, 7 P.M. Power of the Vote: Get Out the Vote Text Banking (Virtual)
Engage in the democratic process by participating in this powerful opportunity to become civically engaged. Participants will text message potential voters in areas with historically low turnout. Feb. 28, 10 A.M. – 4 P.M. Explore the Museum (DuSable Museum-Chicago)
Join the International Culture Organization (ICO) and CSEIP on a trip to the DuSable Museum Black History Museum and Education Center to celebrate Black History Month. The bus will leave from GovState. Transportation, museum tickets and lunch will be covered. Limited Spaces. Must RSVP on Jaguar Connection by Feb. 21.
Feb. 29, 5:30 – 8 P.M. Black Card Revoked, (D1496)
The Black Student Union invites students to a round of this fun and nostalgia-filled game that celebrates African American popular culture.
