The mission for the Center for Performing Arts at Governors State University is to preserve culture, foster artistic expression, and build vibrant communities. It strives to enrich lives through entertainment, education, and the promotion of creativity, contributing to cultural heritage, economic growth, and the overall well-being of society.
Under the leadership of Jane Cox, GSU’s Cultural Managing Director, the CPA has scheduled a rich tapestry of shows and performances that should be enthusiastically received by this season’s audiences. Cox is committed to making the CPA a vibrant hub where creativity knows no bounds.
Cox said she is very excited about his season which kicked off with “Opera Titans” on Oct. 8. The grand debut of “Sugar Skull” follows on Oct. 13, at 7:30 p.m.
Cox said tickets to “Sugar Skull” are selling quickly, and some shows, like “A Tribute to Prince,” already are sold out, which Cox called “a testament to our community’s love for the arts.”
This year, as people eagerly prepare to attend performances at the CPA, there’s a sense of cautious optimism. Ingrid Anderson who is Patron Service Manager for CPA has taken safety seriously, going above and beyond to ensure the well-being of all attendees. Hand sanitizers and masks are readily available, creating a safe and comfortable environment for everyone.
In this post-COVID era, Cox anticipates that the attendance may be more intimate compared to previous years. However, this should be seen as an opportunity for a more personal and immersive experience. With fewer people in the audience, she said, each performance can be savored and appreciated in greater detail. It’s a chance to rediscover the magic of live performances in a more exclusive setting.Top of FormBottom of Form
Under Cox’s leadership, amenities at the performances will have a bit of extra magic. The Theater ManagerTracey Williamshas curated special drinks to complement each show. For example, during “Sugar Skull,” margaritas will be available, fusing culture with libation. It’s a delightful way to immerse in the show’s world, creating a tasty merger of artistry and culinary delight.
Cox has always cherished the belief that every performance is a gem in its own right. Yet, when pressed to choose a personal favorite, her eyes light up at the mention of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” This iconic production has held a special place in her heart since her childhood, and her affection for it shines through. It’s a reminder that even someone as deeply immersed in the world of performing arts as Cox can have a nostalgic and treasured connection to a show that has transcended generations.
In the spirit of making the arts accessible to all, there are a range of ticket discounts for the upcoming shows, and it is always available for GSU students.
