Governors State University (GovState) has launched its competitive Esports program, adding a modern and inclusive athletic track to its student offerings.
Operating under the GovState Athletics Department, the Esports program is structured to function similarly to traditional collegiate sports, competing in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) against other programs in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). This affiliation solidifies GovState’s commitment to competitive gaming as a legitimate sport.
The program is led by the head Esports coach, Kareem Badr, who is responsible for recruiting, skill development, and fostering a positive team culture. The program is explicitly open to students of all skill levels, with plans to establish both varsity and junior varsity (Academy) teams for various games, allowing for a structured path of progression for competitive players.
The heart of the GovState Esports program is its newly completed dedicated space, the Esports Arena. This state-of-the-art facility features both a competitive room, equipped with high-performance PCs and Jaguar-branded gaming chairs for matches, and a separate practice room. The Arena is designed to be more than just a place for competition; it is a community hub focused on student engagement and inspiration.
The competitive structure involves fielding co-ed teams in popular titles such as VALORANT, Rocket League, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, among a diverse range of other fighting, shooter, and sports games. The teams participate in local, regional, and national tournaments, providing players with the opportunity to represent the university and potentially earn scholarships, thereby attracting a new cohort of student-athletes who may not fit traditional athletic profiles.
Looking ahead, the program’s vision is centered on both achievement and community building. The “Echoes of Greatness” initiative is planned to fill the Arena with the program’s history and player highlights, creating an environment that inspires current and future students.
The coach emphasizes cultivating life skills like leadership, strategy, and resilience alongside competitive gaming prowess. By providing a welcoming environment for students who are passionate about gaming, GovState Esports aims not only to compete for championships but also to create a strong sense of camaraderie and a successful program that students are proud to be a part of, underscoring the university’s commitment to meeting students “in their world.”
