Governors State University’s Student Senate held its final open meeting of the 2024–2025 academic year last week, marking the culmination of a productive term filled with student advocacy, organizational growth, and leadership development. The session served as both a reflection on past achievements and a look ahead to the future.
Interim Student Senate President Eraina Green opened the meeting with remarks and important reminders about end-of-year responsibilities. She expressed gratitude for the commitment of Senate members throughout the year. Vice President Brett Porter followed with an update on recent amendments made to the Student Senate bylaws, emphasizing the importance of maintaining policies that adapt to the evolving needs of the student body.
Board of Trustees Student Representative Harish Rayalapati delivered his final report, reflecting on his time in the role and expressing gratitude to the campus community as his term came to a close. His contributions over the year were met with warm appreciation from attendees. Faiza Syed, Student Representative for the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE), provided a summary of the recent IBHE Annual Meeting held at Prairie State College, underscoring the importance of continued student engagement in statewide education initiatives.
The meeting also celebrated the approval of three new student organizations, signaling increased student involvement and a commitment to fostering diverse interests:
• Chemistry Club
• Checkmate Chess Club
• Fellowship of Christian Athletes
These clubs are expected to bring fresh energy and opportunities for collaboration to the student community.
In his final announcement, Rayalapati spotlighted Business Week 2025, a flagship initiative led by the College of Business. He encouraged student participation in the Pitch Party, an event aimed at showcasing student innovation and entrepreneurial spirit.
As the meeting drew to a close, Green proudly announced the newly elected Student Senate leaders for the 2025–2026 academic year. Applause filled the room as the incoming representatives were welcomed, signaling a strong start for the next chapter of student governance at GSU.
