On Thursday, March 6, GovState hosted the Putt & Pitch Social Hour, a unique networking event designed to help students sharpen their elevator pitch, improve their LinkedIn profiles, and build meaningful professional connections. Organized by GovState Career Services and the Alumni Association, the event provided students with an informal yet impactful opportunity to engage with alumni and career experts while enjoying a game of mini golf.
The main goal of the Putt & Pitch event was to create a relaxed setting where students could practice their networking skills, receive valuable career advice, and form new professional relationships. Held in the Hall of Governors from 3 to 4:30 p.m., the event combined professional development with social engagement, allowing students to engage with alumni and career advisors without the pressure of a formal setting.
Students were encouraged to come and go as they pleased while enjoying refreshments, snacks, and mini golf. This informal structure allowed for easy conversations and natural interactions, helping students feel comfortable while building their networks.
A highlight of the event was the opportunity to connect with GovState alumni who are working in various industries. Alumni shared insights on how to navigate the job market, create a standout LinkedIn profile, and develop a compelling elevator pitch. Their guidance helped students understand how to present themselves effectively to potential employers and how to tailor their job search strategies for better outcomes.
Many students found the advice from alumni particularly helpful, as it gave them a clearer understanding of industry expectations and job market trends. Alumni also shared personal experiences and practical tips on how to differentiate themselves in a competitive job market.
The inclusion of mini golf as part of the event added a fun and interactive element, making it easier for students to break the ice and start conversations with their peers and alumni. The casual environment allowed for genuine connections to form, as students were able to engage in lighthearted competition while discussing career goals and professional growth.
To encourage participation, two $25 GovState Bookstore gift cards were awarded to randomly selected attendees. This incentive helped boost attendance and ensured that students remained engaged throughout the event.
Students registered for the event through the GovState Alumni Association events page or through a link sent via text and email. The event saw strong participation, with students expressing appreciation for the chance to connect with industry professionals and peers in a relaxed environment.
Overall, the Putt & Pitch Social Hour was a resounding success. Students left the event with a better understanding of how to navigate the job market, improved networking skills, and a stronger professional network. The combination of career development and social interaction created a positive atmosphere where students felt supported and empowered in their career journeys.
The success of Putt & Pitch underscores the importance of providing students with practical, real-world networking experiences. By blending professional guidance with a fun, engaging activity, GovState University has set a strong example of how to prepare students for the challenges of the job market while fostering a sense of community and connection.
