Excitement and anticipation filled the room as students gathered for the first-ever meeting of the Gavel Club at Governors State University. A diverse group of aspiring speakers and leaders took their seats, eager to embark on a journey of self-improvement and confidence-building. The meeting was more than just an introduction—it was the first step toward creating a supportive community where voices could be heard, stories could be shared, and leadership skills could be refined.
Vilas Jadhav, the club’s president, opened the session with a warm welcome, emphasizing the club’s mission: to help students develop public speaking and leadership skills in a friendly and constructive environment. He introduced the Toastmasters International framework, explaining how the club would follow its structured approach to communication growth.
Vepareddygari Chaitanya, the vice president of education, detailed the learning pathways available to members, from mastering persuasive speaking to refining storytelling techniques. Vuppay Surya Kiran, the vice president of membership, then took the floor, encouraging students to invite their peers and highlighting the benefits of becoming an active member.
The Gavel Club at GovState is affiliated with Toastmasters International and operates under its framework. While Gavel Clubs are not official Toastmasters clubs, they follow the same structure and principles, providing a supportive environment for individuals to develop public speaking and leadership skills. Members benefit from guided learning, speech projects, and structured meetings that align with Toastmasters’ mission of fostering confidence and effective communication. The only difference between a Toastmasters Club and a Gavel Club is that Gavel Club members do not need to pay any membership fee, making it more accessible for students.
Breaking the Ice
The theme of the day, “Ice Breaker,” set the perfect tone for members to introduce themselves. One by one, students stood before the group, sharing their backgrounds, aspirations, and personal experiences. Some spoke confidently, while others hesitated at first but soon found their rhythm. Applause and encouragement followed each speech, reinforcing the club’s core values: support, growth, and positivity.
Then came the impromptu speaking session—a challenge that tested participants’ ability to think on their feet. The topic, “Your Best Experience,” brought out heartfelt stories, humorous anecdotes, and moments of reflection. Some members recalled childhood adventures, while others shared milestones that shaped their lives. The room buzzed with energy, laughter, and newfound camaraderie.
Takeaways and Looking Ahead
As the meeting drew to a close, the enthusiasm in the room was undeniable. Attendees expressed their appreciation for the welcoming atmosphere and the chance to practice speaking without fear of judgment. Many committed to attending future sessions, eager to continue refining their communication skills.
With a solid foundation now set, the Gavel Club is looking forward to its upcoming meetings, where members will dive deeper into structured speeches, leadership roles, and advanced speaking techniques. As the journey unfolds, one thing is certain—every voice in the Gavel Club will have a chance to be heard.
