Governors State University will host the 35th Annual National African American Read-In on Wednesday, Feb. 12, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in Engbretson Hall. Sponsored as part of a national grassroots effort, it will celebrate all things African American literature and kick off literacy initiatives for Black History Month.
The National African American Read-In is the oldest of these events, begun in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English. Over the last 35 years, it has mobilized over six million people around the globe in the name of greater appreciation for Black authors and their works.
GovState invites students, faculty, staff, and community members to participate by reading a short (2-4 minute) selection from an African American writer. These selections can include poems, speeches, essays, or excerpts from books.
Those interested in reading should send their name, email address, and chosen reading selection to [email protected] and cc Dr. Rashidah Muhammad at [email protected].
