The IT department at Governors State has announced that it will update student email addresses during the upcoming break between fall and spring semesters.
The change will involve removing the word “student” from the current @student.govst.edu addresses. A student with the current email address ending in @student.govst.edu will have their address changed to (same as before)@govst.edu.
The Chief Information Officer at Governors State, Chuck Pustz, presented the plan and answered questions at the Student Senate’s open meeting in November. According to Pustz, this change will bring several benefits, including improved university-wide collaboration, full functionality with Microsoft Teams, and enhanced security, which is required by law.
“Everything will be moved,” said Pustz. ”We’ll let you know when we start and finish.”
Student OneDrive data and emails will be migrated to the new accounts from Dec. 20 to 21. Students may not have access and should avoid using their @student.govst.edu accounts on those days.
“Jump on at the end of the day [Dec. 21] or the 22nd, and you should see everything there,” said Pustz.
The new email address will be used for all GSU applications that require a GSU email address. Passwords will not change, and all emails in the student.govst.edu inboxes will be forwarded to the new ones for an undetermined period. Applications that require a GSU username will not be affected.
Students who are employees and already have an @govst.edu email will have their emails combined. Pustz said they might want to create folders to separate incoming emails.
Students should see their calendars and other information transferred to their new accounts. Additionally, any user-created rules established in students’ Outlook may need to be adjusted, updated, or recreated.
More information is available on the university’s website, and students with questions or concerns are encouraged to submit them to the “New Student Email Address and Login Changes Questionnaire.”
