First-Gen Week is here at Governors State University, a time dedicated to celebrating and supporting first-generation college students. For those unfamiliar, first-generation students are those whose parents or guardians did not complete a bachelor’s degree.
This week of events honors their unique journey, providing a chance to connect, share experiences, and build a supportive community. Whether you’re a first-gen freshman just starting your college path or an ally wanting to show support, there’s something for everyone.
Highlights of First-Gen Week
- Walk of Fame (Nov. 4-8, D-Atrium): Visit the Walk of Fame display to explore the inspiring achievements of GSU’s first-gen faculty and staff. These role models prove that success is attainable, reminding first-gen students that they, too, can thrive in college and beyond.
- Friendship Bracelets (Nov. 4, 12-2:30 p.m., Engbretson Hall): Kick off the week with some creativity by making friendship bracelets! This gathering offers an opportunity to meet other first-gen students, share your stories, and talk about the unique experience of being a first-gen college student.
- Election Day (Nov 5): While campus will be closed, students are encouraged to vote and engage with first-gen content online. Voting is an essential part of civic engagement, and what better way to represent your voice as a first-gen student?
- T-Shirt Giveaway (Nov. 6, 12-3 p.m., C1321): Pick up an exclusive First-Gen Week t-shirt to wear for Thursday’s Friendsgiving! These shirts, along with other goodies, help build a sense of identity and pride in your journey.
- Friendsgiving (Nov 7, 12:30-3 p.m., Hall of Honors): The week’s celebration culminates in a Friendsgiving event to mark First-Generation Student Celebration Day. Enjoy delicious food, connect with fellow students, and take pride in your journey. Remember to RSVP, as seats are limited!
Being the first in your family to attend college is a big deal. It’s a journey marked by resilience, independence, and the courage to step into the unknown. First-Gen Week at GSU recognizes that challenge and celebrates each step forward.
Freshmen, this is your chance to connect with others who understand your experience and can offer advice, friendship, and a shared sense of pride. Embrace this opportunity to feel seen, supported, and empowered as you navigate college life.
