Tuesday, Oct. 15, GSU hosted the ‘Cafe y Conchas’ event in room D1496 from 4-6 p.m. to conclude the Hispanic heritage month.
The event started as the hosts encouraged everyone to help themselves to coffee and conchas, a Hispanic pastry treat made from bread and sugar. The treats were spread out on two separate tables: one for the coffee and the other for the conchas.
As everyone got settled, one of the hosts welcomed everyone. The host then introduced everyone to a game where she pulled out a deck of cards with an English word on one side and the Spanish translation of that word on the other side. She instructed everyone in the room to break of into small groups. In these groups, she would read the word out loud in English first and all the people who were a part of the group would have to translate what was said into Spanish. The first to answer correctly would win the card and whichever team would have the most cards by the end of the game would win.
After that game was played, everyone was then asked if they would prefer to play another game as a collective or just go off into our groups to play a game of our choice. Some chose to just sit back and talk or play the game. The games Connect Four and Jenga were offered.
After the games, the head host, Jacqueline Franko, was asked about the reason this particular event was held. “This event was specifically held because we want other students to know about our (Hispanic) culture and also just to get other students engaged, those who are Hispanic or non-Hispanic. Because we want um, other students to learn about our community, our culture, um our traditions and much more.”
