On Tuesday, Oct. 1, GSU’s First Generation Center turn one year old and celebrated by throwing a birthday-themed party in room C1321 for first-generation students and supporters of the Center.
In the context of the university, a first-generation student is one neither of whose parents or guardians attended college or if they did, they did not complete at least a bachelor’s degree.
The party was a valuable experience for those who are the first ones in their family to attend higher education and a good learning experience to meet people from different walks of life.
Participants enjoyed cake and coffee, were able to write supportive messages for first-gen students, and enter a raffle for a swag bag. Attendees met with the First-Generation Center Team and learned about the resources available to students to help them succeed.
Anna Mitchell, the leader behind the First-Generation Collective, said that next week they are heading to the Student Senate to make the Center an official university club, and “they hope to achieve making The First Gen Center an inclusive space and meet peers who are also first gen. They plan on developing workshops to support and further their education and to overall have fun.”
So be on the lookout for more great things to come The First Generation’s future is looking bright as GSU.
