On Sept. 21, the Governors State women’s soccer team traveled to Notre Dame, Indiana, to face Holy Cross. The Jaguars were trying to rebound from last week’s defeat and avoid losing two in a row.
The first half was calm, with only three shots total in the first 33 minutes of play. Holy Cross’ Sydney Beeman started scoring in the 34th minute, followed by another score from Holy Cross about four minutes later.
Jaguars’ defender Koumba Dembele scored in the 40th minute off an assist from midfielder Claudia Lopez, making the score 2-1 at halftime.
Holy Cross stunned the Jaguars by adding three more goals in the first five minutes of the second half. Holy Cross then added one more goal to make the final score 6-1.
There were some bright spots for the Jaguars. In addition to Dembele’s goal, Ana Rodrigues, Morgan Bean, and Grace Mclaughlin all took two shots apiece, and five out of the six were on goal. Goalkeeper Valentina Jimenez also made six saves, stopping the score from being run up, and the defense as a whole applied proper pressure to force a lot of shots from Holy Cross to miss wide.
The Jaguars will face Indiana South Bend on Sept. 25 in Indiana.
