Governors State University is gearing up for a super event on Tuesday, March 5, from 7-10 p.m. in the Lakeside Lounge.
As the details come together, hosts of the Super Tuesday Election Day Watch Party expect it to be a multifaceted exploration of politics and participation.
Attendees will enjoy pizza, snacks and beverages along with a list of political-themed activities. The hosts, Professors Jayne Goode, David Rhea, Jim Vining and Crystal Harris, along with Fatima Sattar from the Student’s Vote Coalition, want to facilitate a comfortable and enjoyable atmosphere throughout the evening.
While the event is open to all students, they have extended a special invitation to those enrolled in courses focusing on politics. They hope to encourage a rich dialogue and exchange of ideas.
Attendees can look forward to various activities aimed at educating and engaging. Key highlights include:
Voter Registration: A cornerstone of the evening will help students register to vote and ensure their voices are heard in upcoming elections.
Illinois Mock Vote: Participants will have the chance to engage in a mock vote, a hands-on way to understand the voting process and the significance of voting.
Live Viewing of Election Night Results: A live viewing of Super Tuesday’s primary night results will offer a real-time glimpse into the democratic process at work, accompanied by discussions and analysis.
Raffle for Gift Cards: To add an element of excitement, the event will conclude with a raffle, offering attendees the chance to win gift cards.
Political Identification Station: This activity aims to help students explore and identify their political leanings in a supportive educational setting.
“Some of our students have never voted before,” Goode said. “They have no idea how their feelings align with a political party, so this event will allow them to learn who is on the ballot and which candidates represent their values.”
Goode explained that the Super Tuesday event is not just an opportunity for students to engage with the democratic process but also a call to action, encouraging young adults to become informed, active participants in their democracy at a time when every vote counts.
Guest speakers at the event are to be announced. For more information, contact Crystal Harris or Jayne Goode.
