After two days under a boil order, water on campus has been declared safe to drink by Aqua Illinois.
Classes proceeded as scheduled despite a boil water advisory ending on January 31. This precaution followed operational issues at the local water plant, leading to higher-than-normal turbidity (dirt and sediment) levels. Drinking water from the sinks or water fountains was not recommended. Students on campus were advised not to use the water to wash dishes or brush their teeth.
Aqua Illinois’ notice stated that “turbidity has no health effects. However, turbidity can interfere with disinfection and provide a medium for microbial growth. Turbidity may indicate the presence of disease-causing organisms. These organisms include bacteria, viruses, and parasites, which can cause symptoms such as nausea, cramps, diarrhea, and associated headaches. People with severely compromised immune systems, infants, and some elderly may be at increased risk. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their healthcare providers.”
Aqua’s website says the plant is now operating normally, and the water is safe to drink.
