In a continued effort to increase student involvement in the upcoming elections, Dr. Crystal Harris spearheaded a successful voter registration event during the second week of the semester.
The event in the Hall of Governors encouraged students to register to vote, update their voting information, and engage in meaningful discussions about the upcoming election. Harris, known for her passionate advocacy for civic engagement, led the charge, providing guidance, resources, and encouragement to students.
“We have registered quite a few students today,” Harris said. “It is nice when students can come by, and we have time to explain why this election is important.”
The event also provided a place where students could ask questions about the voting process, including how to find their polling place, understand ballot measures, and the importance of local elections. The initiative was met with enthusiastic participation, highlighting the growing interest among young voters to play an active role in shaping their future.
Harris established a voter education initiative in 2022. Harris and other volunteers work to promote the student vote at GSU through the Students Learn Students Vote Coalition (SLSV) and the All in to Vote campus challenge. The groups host events on campus around election time.
Members of the GSU community can “join the movement” and the conversation by checking out the SLSV starter packs. These customized guides help to navigate conversations about SLSV, voting, and elections. Students can ensure they have the latest election information on the All in to Vote website. Visiting the site also can help GSU climb the rankings as one of the most engaged student bodies in the country.
Looking ahead, Harris and her team are organizing a Super Tuesday Watch Party at Governors State University. This event is expected to draw a large crowd of students, faculty, and community members eager to witness the results of one of the most pivotal days in the election season. The watch party aims to further educate attendees about the electoral process and foster community and shared responsibility.
