Governors State University is located in Will County, Illinois. Established in 1969, Governors State (Gov State, GSU) is part of the Illinois state university system, and it serves a diverse population.
In addition to the various accredited degree programs, Gov State serves as a hub of artistic and intellectual activities. The university’s campus includes an award-winning sculpture garden and frequently updated art exhibitions. Every semester brings new theatrical performances, discussions, and events hosted by programs such as the Social Justice Initiative and the Center for Community Media. These efforts enhance the university’s cultural fabric and forge strong connections with the local community.
The Board of Trustees is a group of appointed individuals overseeing the university’s strategic direction. This board works closely with the university president. This administrative body steers GSU through its long-term goals and daily operations. The president’s role is pivotal in managing the administrative functions and embodying the university’s values and vision.
The governor of Illinois selects the board of trustees for the university. The board is currently at capacity with seven members. A student trustee attends board meetings and represents the student body.
The university conducts a public selection process when hiring a new president. A hiring committee finds a candidate, seeks community input, and the board makes the final decision based on the committee’s recommendations.
The university’s governance structure then branches into various academic and administrative departments overseen by a provost. The departments, led by deans and directors, comprise the main structure of GSU. They ensure that the university’s educational programs remain innovative, relevant, and high-quality. Faculty and staff play a crucial role in curriculum development, recruitment, and research initiatives and directly impact the student’s educational experience.
The active involvement of students and faculty provides balance to this governance model. Student media and the Student Senate serve as the student body’s voice. The student government advocates for student interests and participates in essential university decisions surrounding student life. The Faculty Senate ensures that the faculty’s perspective is integral to the decision-making process. Through shared governance, faculty has primary responsibility for fundamental areas of university operations.
The board of trustees and various committees meet publicly throughout the year. The meeting dates and minutes are available on the university website. Meetings are public and accessible on campus at Engbretson Hall or online. (The online meetings can be accessed through the posted meeting minutes on the website.)
