Questions continue to swirl around the status of Ante Cop, the head coach of the GSU women’s soccer team.

Zion Banks, manager, Media and External Relations, a spokesperson for the university confirmed on Nov. 30 that “the university currently is investigating allegations of alleged misconduct regarding the women’s soccer program.”

The Phoenix was able to confirm that Coach Cop had not been performing his coaching duties for several weeks. In mid-November, however, the coach sent members of the team an email that said he had “been fully cleared to resume my head coaching duties.”

Also in November, Athletic Director Tony Bates initially confirmed the coach had been suspended, but then later retracted that statement. Bates did not respond to recent phone calls or emails for further comment.

Phoenix reporters spoke with Coach Cop on Dec. 2. When asked about the suspension, he said: “No comment. I just finished with my meeting with HR. I am all clear; everything speaks for itself.”

Banks declined to say whether Cop had been suspended, calling it a personnel matter.

The university administration has declined to provide any details about the allegations that sparked its investigation.

Reporters reached out to numerous members of the team. Most of those who responded said they had been told not to comment; the few who did speak did so only on the condition that the Phoenix withhold their identities.
